WINNER: HLANGANISANI CONSTRUCTION CC - HLUHLUWE DISASTER MANAGEMENT CENTRE AND FIRE STATION
Disaster Management Centre:
The Disaster Management Centre consisted of concrete bases with conventional columns and slab over on ground floor level, and columns, load bearing brickwork and structural steel rafters on first floor level. Roofsheets consisted of Kliplock sheets on steel purlins, with factorlite foil insulation. Brickwork was done in face bricks to patterns, with plastered and painted walls internally. Precast concrete cills were manufactured and installed on site. Doors and glazing was done in powder coated aluminium, with curtain glazing at the boardroom and office facade. Internally all doors, finishes etc were done to standard conventional methods.
This building was done in similar fashion to the Disaster Management Centre, with double volume areas for the fire engines, with high access doors for entering and exiting. There is also a small gymnasium in this building.
HIGHLY COMMENDED: G2 CONSTRUCTION (PTY) LTD - LIV VILLAGE - AIDS ORPHANAGE
The project was an Aids orphanage at which G2 Construction had successfully completed housing, factories, a school, an ECD center, a clinic, a hall and volunteer accommodation.
Building methodology was based on cost effectiveness without compromising on program, quality or safety. The hall which was constructed with large castellated beams bolted onto holding down bolts required precision which was initially set out by survey and then checked by the site staff throughout construction to allow the hall portal frame to fit.
The rock encountered in the trenches could not be blasted and was broken out using compressors on an accelerated program to catch up the delay caused by this unexpected obstacle.
