2014 excellence

Master Builders KwaZulu-Natal Association held its annual awards at the ICC on Friday, 17 October 2014. There were over 500 guests in attendance including award winners, industry stakeholders, government representatives and members of the Association.  Dignitaries in attendance included the Honourable Minister T W Nxesi , Minister of Public Works, Italian Ambassador: His Excellency Vincenzo Schioppa and Speaker for Ethekwini Municiplity,  Logie Naidoo. Justice Malala also shared some news and views at the function.

The Association merged the Health and safety awards and excellence in construction awards into a gala awards extravaganza. The judges in both competitions were mandated to look for entries that clearly demonstrated an unrelenting commitment to quality, excellence and responsible business. With projects ranging over a widely spread area, an impressive total of 89 entries were received of which 54 were for the Regional Health and Safety competition and 35 for  the Excellence in Construction competition, reiterating that there is  excellence within the KwaZulu-Natal building industry. Testimony to this is the fact that Members of Master Builders KwaZulu-Natal Association dominated the National Safety competition having scooped 8 of the 10 national awards.

In his opening comments, the Minister stated: “by recognising excellence in the work of individuals and companies, we also raise the bar and we inspire others to emulate their example.  “As we strive for excellence, we contribute to the broader socio-economic development of society and we improve the conditions of South Africans as a whole. “

One of the key priorities listed by the Minister in his policy statement was for a renewed and sustained programme of action to transform the built environment, so that the ownership, management and skills profile better reflects the demographics of our country.

He went on to say that “Transformation must include support for black and female contractors and property practitioners, as well as the production of black and female professionals and artisans in the built environment disciplines. We cannot be complacent when only 24% of built environment professionals are black and 9% female”.

President of the Association Mr Mogamat Behardien opened the gala event and welcomed all the guests. He honoured all entrants in the competitions and stated that “as we go forward, I hope we can introduce further innovations and pockets of excellence”.  He acknowledged all entrants for their contribution towards creating a culture of on-going construction excellence.
