WINNER: AVENG GRINAKER-LTA, LESOTHO REFERRAL HOSPITAL

The project specification was to construct the main hospital with wards, the Gateway Clinic, the taxi rank as well as other medical departments. 33000m² of external roads along with 33000m² of parking area was also specified on the contract. Two existing clinics had to be refurbished and a third demolished and rebuilt in three different districts.

Foundations were made using reinforced concrete bases with load bearing brickwork on concrete strip footings. The structure consists of concrete columns with load bearing brickwork carrying timber roof trusses with steel roof covering. The external facades are in brickwork, plastered and painted.

ST Annes Hospital

Half the new pediatric ward at St Annes Hospital had to be constructed under an existing roof with the balance of it over an existing balcony. A new roof was needed to cover this area and a ring beam had to be built to accommodate it. In addition, the balcony area was located directly above an existing maternity ward which had to be kept fully functional and watertight during construction. The original building was built using face brick; the new extension was required to match it.

Ascot Park Hospital

HIGHLY COMMENDED B:ROD'S CONSTRUCTION, ASCOT PARK HOSPITAL

The project entailed converting 2nd floor offices to accommodate new wards; nurses change rooms as well as duty stations. All internal partitions were constructed from brick, plastered and painted on both sides with materials transported to the second floor by hoist. New floor screeds were finished with a vinyl sheet covering and porcelain tiles were used in the bathrooms. All services such as medical gas, mechanical ventilation, nurse's call system, fire protection, electrical and plumbing were installed to the facility.
